Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2007 Wins PC Magazine Editors' Choice for Security Suites
Market Wire, October, 2006
Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced that Norton Internet Security 2007 earned the prestigious PC Magazine Editors' Choice Award for security suites. Norton Internet Security's best-in-class security suite beat out competitive offerings and earned high praise for its antivirus and antispyware protection, anti-phishing technology, and "silent but lethal" firewall. Norton Internet Security 2007 is an innovative suite of integrated security tools designed to proactively protect users from a vast array of online threats -- including spyware, viruses, worms, hackers, phishing sites, and crimeware -- while maximizing security, performance, and ease-of-use.
"PC Magazine's recognition of Norton Internet Security 2007 as Editors' Choice is especially gratifying because our team dedicated the past year to improving every critical aspect of the product," said Rowan Trollope, vice president, Consumer Engineering, Symantec. "The 2007 suite delivers an unbeatable one-two punch of technology and performance enhancements with a focus on what customers want most: state-of-the-art protection from online threats inside a suite that's smaller and faster than ever before."
"Norton Internet Security 2007 gives you best-in-class firewall, antivirus, and antispyware protection, and those are the most important elements of a security suite," editors wrote. "These factors plus the silent wisdom of the firewall's program control make Norton Internet Security 2007 the new PC Magazine Editors' Choice for security suite."
Norton Internet Security 2007's industry-leading combination of new features and enhancements include:
-- Smart Firewall -- "Norton Internet Security takes the approach that
the firewall is more qualified to evaluate programs than the user. It
automatically allows access to known good programs and blocks known bad
ones," editors wrote. "I really like this approach; it's the wave of the
future."
-- Enhanced Antivirus and Antispyware Protection -- "The company's
antivirus technology gets full honors," according to editors. In addition,
"It did a fantastic job" at detecting and removing spyware from infested
systems. "Norton Internet Security sailed grandly past the reefs that sunk
its competition," editors wrote. That, together with its effectiveness at
blocking malware installation on a clean system prompted editors to
conclude, "Its performance ranks with that of... our Editors' Choice
products for standalone antispyware."
-- Phishing Protection -- Norton Internet Security evaluates each site a
user visits to see if it's a known fraudulent site; if not, it analyzes the
site's underlying code looking for anything sneaky. "While other
products... rely mostly on their list of known bad sites, Norton Internet
Security puts more trust in its analytical ability -- and it's impressively
effective," editors wrote. "So far, Symantec's anti-phishing technology is
the category leader."
-- Optimized Product Performance -- Norton Internet Security 2007
includes a variety of performance enhancements, including less memory
usage, faster scans, faster boot time, and faster UI response. "The design
strives to limit the utility's impact on system performance," editors
concluded in evaluating the overall effectiveness of these measures.
