REMINDER: ORLive Presents: Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery Minimally Invasive Operation to Treat Morbid Obesity

Market Wire, December, 2006

Surgeons at Tufts-New England Medical Center will perform the "gold standard" for treating obesity during a live Webcast ( www.or-live.com ) December 6th, at 6:30 PM EST.

Dr. Scott Shikora, Chief of Bariatric Surgery at Tufts-NEMC and Surgical Director of the Medical Center's comprehensive Obesity Consultation Center, along with bariatric surgeons Dr. Michael Tarnoff and Dr. Julie Kim, will perform the surgery. Tufts-NEMC was the first medical center in New England to do the gastric bypass surgery using minimally invasive techniques. The Medical Center's surgeons remain the most experienced in the region, with outcomes more favorable than the national average. The Bariatric Surgery team is also an integral part of Tufts-NEMC's Obesity Consultation Center, which offers integrated, multidisciplinary care for patients battling obesity. In addition to obesity surgery, the OCC provides nutritional, medical, behavioral and exercise components -- all as part of its comprehensive program to help patients achieve and maintain substantial weight loss.

This procedure is very serious, life-altering surgery. It is appropriate for select patients, and is done only after extensive evaluation and consultation.

Using minimally-invasive techniques surgeons reduce the size of the stomach to a one-ounce pouch (equivalent to the size of an egg). To perform the surgery, Drs. Shikora, Tarnoff and Kim will make six small incisions to insert instruments and a minature camera. The surgery takes approximately two hours and most patients can be home in 2-3 days.

Long term analysis reveals that gastric bypass yields long term, durable weight loss in nearly 75% of patients. Success after gastric bypass is dependant on long-term behavioral and dietary modification.

Scott Shikora, MD, FACS, is Chief of Bariatric Surgery at Tufts-New England Medical Center and Surgical Director of the Medical Center's Obesity Consultation Center. He is a Professor of Surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine. Michael Tarnoff, MD, FACS, is a surgeon in Tufts-New England Medical Center's Divisions of Bariatric and General Surgery and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine. Julie Kim, MD, FACS, is a surgeon in Tufts-NEMC's Divisions of Bariatric and General Surgery and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine.
