Free Online Dating Sites Are Appropriate According to ChristiaNet Poll

ChristiaNet.com ( http://www.christianet.com ), the world's largest Christian portal with twelve million monthly page loads, asked readers, "Should Christians participate in online dating sites?" The majority of participants seemed to agree that free online dating sites are okay as long as caution is observed. One participant stated, "I believe you can. I met my husband online on ChristiaNet.com. It can be done in a Christian manner if you keep your standards in check." While many agree that it is okay for Christian singles to place a profile on a Christian site, some respondents felt that it is important to be certain that the site is Christian-oriented. Out of 200 readers, there were 104 who felt that God can use a Christian dating site for the good of His children. Some people suggested using the opportunity on free online dating sites to witness to others about Jesus. Emphasis was placed on asking the Holy Spirit for discernment and guidance before getting involved with someone online. There was a substantial amount of people who felt that God chooses many different ways to bring Believers together. One of the key concerns was stated well by one respondent, "Yes, it is a good forum to meet people, but with prayer and caution; because everyone's agenda isn't always honorable."

Thirty-two of the readers answered "no" to the poll question and emphasized the importance of safety because many sites attract people who aren't honorable. One Believer wrote, "I would rather meet friends online for a brother/sister relationship." All Christian singles should measure their actions according to God's word. Those who are lonely should turn to God for comfort and pray for His will to be accomplished. One believer felt that "dating" is not Biblical.

Sixty-four of the participants were unsure about Christians becoming involved in online dating. A few remarks were by Believers who had bad experiences and felt discouraged. One believer stated, "If you do, it should be to look for other Christian singles." Each person should examine their motives and be careful not to become involved with others for the wrong reasons.
