Local News Goes Mobile
Market Wire, February, 2007
The Press-Enterprise announced today the launch of pe.com/mobile , a new interactive resource that delivers local news and information to web-enabled cell phones. The content is constantly updated throughout each day and organized into eight categories of interest: Local News, Local Weather (including Doppler Radar and five-day forecasts), Local Sports, Entertainment, Business News, State News, National News, and International News.
"After so much time in development and testing, we're excited to offer something truly unique," said Paul McAfee, Interactive Development Operations Manager at The Press-Enterprise, "as more people become comfortable accessing the internet from their cell phone, the need for resources that has been designed specifically for that format increases. We feel like we're ahead of the curve and offering something of real value."
To better serve and reach its readers, The Press-Enterprise has become an enhanced multimedia business. Pe.com/mobile is the first of many new innovative features that will be introduced by The Press-Enterprise, and the first product of its kind designed to meet the specific needs of mobile online users and advertisers in Inland Southern California.
"We'll always take great pride in being the local newspaper," said Ron Redfern, CEO and publisher of The Press-Enterprise Company, "but technological advances and our readers' desire to take advantage of the conveniences offered by technology require us to be so much more. What's exciting is our ability to exceed that expectation by delivering local news and information you can trust, when and where you want to connect with the community."
The Press-Enterprise's new multimedia focus will include an increased emphasis on the dissemination of breaking news and information via The Press-Enterprise's website, www.Pe.com , including streaming video; the launch of more than 30 micro-local community Web pages; a greater focus on online advertising sales; the expansion of targeted sales opportunities in advertising and circulation through database marketing; an increased focus on developing print and online products to serve distinct interests throughout the region; and the enhancement of production processes to provide earlier delivery for the region's many commuters.
