Botnet Tracking: Tools, Techniques, and Lessons Learned
DESCRIPTION:
Dr. Jose Nazario will address botnets and how today's most dangerous cyber criminals are willing to pay into the thousands of dollars for programs that grant them access to personal information such as tax, patent, or military info.
He will describe the structure of botnets; how bots have historically created the opportunity to perform direct measurements and observation; and how, in the past, various approaches such as honeypots, infected hosts and normal IRC clients have been used successfully to track bots.
Dr. Nazario will also address how the pace or migration of botnets from IRC has increased with many botnets moving to a web-based model. Moving forward, instead of a persistent IRC connection, these bots will make a periodic poll to a web server for new commands and updates.
