REDFLEX Implements First of Its Kind Freeway Speed Monitoring Program to Protect Scottsdale's Loop 101
Market Wire, April, 2007
Scottsdale's 101 State Highway is now significantly safer for drivers thanks to the rollout of a first-of-its-kind highway speed monitoring network from REDFLEX Traffic Systems that went into effect the end of last month. The program follows closely on the heels of a nine-month pilot project on Loop 101 that utilized speed-trip sensors to monitor and photograph drivers exceeding the stated speed limit without the need for an on-site police officer.
The initial pilot project resulted in a significant reduction in speeding, side swipe crashes and the injuries resulting from this type of collision. Economic benefits tied to the program included $10.5 million in annual savings thanks to a decrease in medical expenses, lost wages and decreased productivity.
" Freeway speed enforcement is yet another innovative program that speaks volumes on our commitment to create safer communities built around our world class portfolio of public safety technology. It's extremely gratifying to see proof positive that our systems work and we expect other highway programs will follow quickly thanks to the high rate of success," said Karen Finley, President and CEO of REDFLEX Traffic Systems.
Study results originated from the collaborative research and implementation efforts of the Arizona Department of Transportation, Arizona Department of Public Safety, and the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration. Data collected in these extensive studies indicated that single driver car accidents were reduced by 71 percent, side swipe collisions by 58 percent, and accident-related injuries by 40 percent all the while drastically reducing driver error on the highway.
In light of the results of the study, Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano urged Scottsdale to resume the freeway speed enforcement program until Arizona can complete a state-wide strategic review. In written communications, Governor Napolitano said, "After reading the results, I believe we cannot afford to keep the Scottsdale cameras off in light of their benefits to law enforcement and public safety."
Drivers exceeding the posted speed limit are photographed by REDFLEX cameras which are then reviewed by city officials to ensure the legitimacy of each ticket before a citation is issued. During the course of the pilot project, REDFLEX technology documented dangerous speeders traveling on Highway 101, including one ticket issued for speed in excess of 140 MPH.
