University of Tulsa Drives Adoption for Campus-Wide Mobility With Pervasive Cisco Unified Wireless Network

Cisco® (NASDAQ: CSCO) today announced that the University of Tulsa, one of the country's top institutions for higher education, is using Cisco's Unified Wireless Network to deliver wireless access across its campus, serving more than 4,000 students and 1,100 employees.

The new, pervasive wireless network will provide the university's students and faculty with wireless access in all classrooms, campus apartments and dormitories, and throughout its extensive campus common areas, which covers 200 acres and 70 buildings. Installation of the campus-wide wireless system is expected to be complete by Aug. 15, in time for the fall semester.

The foundation of the University of Tulsa (TU) network is the Cisco Unified Wireless Network architecture, including Cisco Aironet® 1100 Series Access Points (APs) for indoor locations and Cisco Aironet 1510 mesh APs for outdoor locations. Cisco Wireless Service Modules (WiSM) in a Cisco Catalyst® 6500 Series Switch provide centralized control of the wireless network, and a Cisco Wireless Control System (WCS) will enable a single point of management for the university's wireless infrastructure.

According to Dale Schoenefeld, TU's chief information officer and vice president for information systems, a primary driver for the wireless network is enhancing the student experience and recruitment of prospective students.

"Today's students have high expectations for wireless capabilities no matter where they are," Schoenefeld said. "Our new wireless network will help meet these expectations. At the same time, we can take advantage of the wireless network to enable a wide set of learning tools and course management systems for the classroom that will improve the efficiency and productivity of students and faculty alike."

The wireless deployment will strengthen and enhance TU's institutional technology program, which will allow faculty to implement wireless technologies in the classroom. As an example, some of TU's law professors have utilized software that lets students take tests in the classroom using their laptops. The software gives users common access to certain material, but locks down machines so that students cannot access other information that would provide them with an unfair advantage.

Previously, TU had successfully deployed Cisco wireless solutions to enable access across approximately 60 percent of the campus. The goal of the new deployment is to provide 100 percent coverage for the campus -- both inside buildings and on the campus outdoor areas.

To deploy the system, TU partnered with Presidio Corporation, a local systems integrator and Cisco partner.
