Hospital Sao Sebastiao Improving Anywhere, Anytime Medical Services with Nortel Network Upgrade
Market Wire, April, 2007
The Hospital de Sao Sebastiao in Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal, will improve its patient care through an electronic paperless medical environment supported by a secure, reliable and always-on network with new mobile communications capabilities from Nortel(1) (TSX: NT)(NYSE: NT) Healthcare Solutions . The Hospital de Sao Sebastian is recognized nationally for the quality of its medical treatment and its technological innovation.
The new high-performance IP solution from Nortel will provide Hospital de Sao Sebastiao with the increased bandwidth required for new medical healthcare applications, like Picture Archiving and Communications systems (PACS), for improving real-time patient critical care in ways its previous network was unable to support.
"Our network will help us deliver optimum levels of care and allow us to explore new and innovative technologies to support a paperless environment," said Rui Gomes, IT manager, Hospital de Sao Sebastiao. "Our hospital has a strong collaborative relationship with Nortel. They have always worked hard to understand our requirements, to supply us with the best technology available for our needs, and to provide a level of support that we couldn't get from any other organisation."
"Hospital de Sao Sebastiao has relied on Nortel to advise them on data and wired networking for the last seven years," said Bill Weber, leader, Enterprise Solutions Iberia. "With Nortel's Healthcare Solutions providing secure, always-on network applications that improve communications and collaboration, Hospital de Sao Sebastian is shaping the future of patient care."
The deployment of these new medical services for the hospital requires an always-on network to allow immediate availability of medical records and critical information. This is ensured thanks to advanced technologies like Split Multilink Trunking (SMLT) that provides active and non-intrusive consistent delivery of data without loss and Quality of Service (QoS) to prioritize applications and service delivery elements.
Hospital de Sao Sebastiao will deploy Nortel's WLAN 2300 system - a secure Wi-Fi platform that is helping to revolutionize the healthcare sector by providing staff with anywhere and anytime access to critical information and resources on their medical campus. Advanced mobility solutions assist in the reduction of errors by capturing and delivering critical medical data at the point of care and allowing staff to spend more time on patient care and less time chasing clinical information. Nortel WLAN 2300 Series offers a complete 802.11 solution for enterprises wishing to deploy widespread wireless coverage for today's business, IP telephony and converged multimedia applications. More than 120 access points will give full coverage to the Hospital campus.
The solutions deployed at Hospital de Sao Sebastiao include Nortel Ethernet Routing Switches 8600 offering scalable, sub-second fail-over resiliency through Nortel's Split Multi-Link Trunking and Ethernet Routing Switches 5000 Series designed to provide high-density Gigabit desktop connectivity and Power over Ethernet (PoE) capability.
