"The Challenge of Leading Change in K-12 Education" program is specifically designed for educators tackling tough challenges. This program teaches the Adaptive Leadership framework to enable greater and faster progress on what may have previously been insurmountable challenges. "We designed this program specifically for educators who are attempting to make changes in their school or district," said Marty Linsky, CLA co-founder and Harvard University faculty. "Educators have specific challenges they face when attempting to deal with seemingly irresolvable issues that stall strategic initiatives, divide stakeholders and prevent them from moving forward."
Through a combination of case studies, discussions, small group work and guided reflection, participants will learn how to apply the Adaptive Leadership framework to develop strategies and action steps they can use in their schools or districts. This includes how to:
-- Mobilize change across differing subgroups and loyalties;
-- Effectively manage deep value conflicts within the organization and
its people.
-- "Get on the balcony(TM)," orchestrate constructive conflict, think and
act politically, give the work back, and use other Adaptive Leadership
behaviors;
-- Develop the capacity and skill to innovate and prototype new
initiatives;
-- Strengthen the ability to face internal resistance while implementing
major changes;
-- Develop the capacity to face uncertainty about personal approaches and
styles;
-- Care for yourself and sustain your purpose and value.
The program faculty includes Marty Linsky and Lee Teitel. Linsky is a Harvard University faculty member and co-founder of Cambridge Leadership Associates. Known for his seminal work during the last two decades on the practice and teaching of leadership, his research focuses on how to build adaptive capacity in societies, businesses, and nonprofits. He co-authored the best-selling book "Leadership on the Line: Staying Alive through the Dangers of Leading" with Ron Heifetz.
Lee Teitel has extensive experience in educational leadership having worked for more than 15 years as a professor at the University of Massachusetts and as a lecturer and visiting professor (2004-2005) at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education. He recently became the founding director of the Executive Leadership Program for Educators, an innovative national effort based at Harvard that works with state commissioners of education and school superintendents, along with their leadership teams and key stakeholders, to bring high-quality teaching and learning to scale in urban and high-need districts.
