David J. Barrett Elected Trustee Under William Randolph Hearst's Will

David J. Barrett, president and chief executive officer of Hearst-Argyle Television, Inc. and a board member of Hearst Corporation and Hearst-Argyle Television, has been elected as one of the 13 lifetime testamentary trustees of the trust established under the will of William Randolph Hearst. The announcement was made today by Victor F. Ganzi, president and chief executive officer of Hearst Corporation, and George R. Hearst, Jr., chairman of the board of directors of Hearst Corporation.
Barrett succeeds Raymond J. Petersen, who passed away on July 11, 2007, after 38 years as a trustee. Petersen joined Hearst Corporation in 1948 and rose through the executive ranks, becoming executive vice president of Hearst Magazines in 1973.
Hearst Corporation, one of the nation's largest diversified media companies, is owned by The Hearst Family Trust. Among other responsibilities, the 13 trustees elect members to the Corporation's current 19-member board of directors.
With Barrett's election, the trustees of The Hearst Family Trust are Barrett; Anissa B. Balson; Frank A. Bennack, Jr.; John G. Conomikes; Richard E. Deems; Victor F. Ganzi; George R. Hearst, Jr.; John R. Hearst, Jr.; William R. Hearst III; Harvey L. Lipton; Gilbert C. Maurer; Mark F. Miller and Virginia Hearst Randt.
Barrett has been president and chief executive officer of Hearst-Argyle since 2001. He was elected a member of Hearst Corporation's Board of Directors in 1996.
Prior to the August 1997 merger of Hearst Broadcasting and Argyle Television, Barrett was a vice president of Hearst Corporation and deputy general manager of Broadcasting, with operating oversight for the company's television and radio stations, as well as its Boston-based production company. Barrett joined Hearst in 1984 as general manager of its Baltimore radio stations, and subsequently became general manager of WBAL-TV before relocating to New York in his corporate position in 1991.
Barrett serves on the boards of directors of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), Maximum Service Television, Inc. (MSTV), the Broadcasters Foundation, the Emma L. Bowen Foundation, the Center for Communication, Inc., and the Foundation of American Women in Radio and Television (AWRT). He is a past chair and director of the ABC Television Affiliates Association.
