Microsoft Updating Windows OS Silently, Reports Windows Secrets
Market Wire, September, 2007
Author Scott Dunn reveals in the Sept. 13 issue of the Windows Secrets Newsletter ( www.windowssecrets.com ) evidence that Microsoft Corporation is installing updated software to its Windows operating system even when users have disabled the auto-installation of patches.
According to Dunn, who is associate editor of WindowsSecrets.com, "This is disconcerting not only for individual consumers, but for businesses especially. Many companies require testing of patches before they are widely installed, and businesses in this situation are objecting to the stealth patching."
The breach was first discovered by a Windows Secrets reader who had disabled the automatic installation of patches. The complete story can be found at http://WindowsSecrets.com/comp/070913/#story1
"There is nothing harmful, as far as we can tell, about the files that Microsoft is downloading," says Brian Livingston, editorial director of the Windows Secrets newsletter. "No software conflicts have been reported as a result. We are simply questioning Microsoft's stealthy methods -- and it gives us pause to consider how this mechanism might be used by the company in the future."
