Professor Joost Pauwelyn, Noted Scholar on World Trade Organization, Joins King & Spalding's International Trade Practice

King & Spalding, a leading international law firm, announced today that Professor Joost Pauwelyn has joined its international trade practice as senior advisor. Pauwelyn is a world-renowned expert on international economic law, particularly the law of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and international investment law.

Pauwelyn was formerly an official with the WTO's Legal Affairs Division and with the WTO Appellate Body Secretariat. Upon joining academia, he continued to advise governments and private entities as a consultant on WTO dispute settlement proceedings, trade negotiations and other trade and investment matters. His academic research and consultancy experience have focused on diverse areas, including market access for goods and services, subsidies, environment, health and safety, trade in energy and human rights.

Pauwelyn continues his current position as a professor at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. He recently joined the Graduate Institute after serving five years at Duke University School of Law as a tenured professor of law and director of the JD/LLM Program and the Duke/Geneva Institute in Transnational Law. Pauwelyn has also been a visiting professor at Georgetown University Law Center and formerly practiced law in the litigation department of De Bandt, Van Hecke & Lagae in Brussels.

Pauwelyn received a Ph.D. in law from the University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland, a Magister Juris from Oxford University, a master's degree in law from Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium), and a bachelor's degree in law from the University of Namur (Belgium). He was also an Erasmus Scholar at the University of London's Queen Mary and Westfield College.
