Drug Rehab Referral Provides Intervention for Families of Addicts
Market Wire, September, 2007
Last week the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) released the results of the most comprehensive study on drug use in the U.S. While there was some good news -- 4 million received some sort of professional help -- the fact remains that the remaining 21.1 million Americans who met the medical definition for dependence on illicit drugs or alcohol are still in need of treatment. Even worse, according to the study, 95.5 percent of them are either unaware that they need help or don't think they need it, and have not sought treatment from drug rehab facilities or health care professionals.

"These results are not surprising," said Eric Mitchell, Founder of Drug Rehab Referral, a company dedicated to helping people find the right alcohol or drug treatment for their situation. "That's why we provide interventions. The majority of calls we receive are from distraught family members. Sometimes they've suffered through years of watching someone they care about ruin their lives and their livelihood. They've tried to convince them that they have a problem and need help, but are continually met with resistance. They just don't know where to turn. Finally, they call us," he said.
Most alcoholics and drug abusers promise they will change but it's painfully rare. Pleas and reasoning from friends and family is not enough. Only a well-trained and experienced intervention specialist understands alcohol and drug abuse and what the addicted person is going through. A specialist knows how to approach someone who is addicted, and how to reach and get through to them so they can finally agree to get help.
"Despite the promises and the best of intentions," Mr. Mitchell said, "most addicts are just not able to do it on their own. They don't intentionally break their promises, they just can't help themselves. The situation is far beyond their control."
September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. The 21.1 million Americans still suffering from alcohol and drug addiction who are avoiding drug rehab or don't even think they need it are not going to get the help they need unless someone who cares about them takes action. And professional intervention may be the only answer.
"Through its successful interventions, Drug Rehab Referral has helped hundreds of families deal with the crisis of alcohol and drug addiction, and helped them find a successful drug rehab program that will finally handle the addiction," Mr. Mitchell said. "Make National Recovery Month the month to help someone you care about get into a successful alcohol or drug rehab program ."
