Synacor Deploys Cloudmark Gateway for Hosted Messaging Providers to Enable Delivery of Secure Outsourced E-mail Services

Market Wire, October, 2007

Cloudmark, Inc., the global leader in carrier-grade messaging security, today announced that Synacor, a provider of Internet tools, portals and content for cable, Internet and telecommunications service providers, has deployed Cloudmark Gateway(TM) together with Cloudmark Authority(TM) in its hosted messaging environment to support the deployment of its e-mail client by customers. Cloudmark Gateway is a high-performance edge mail transfer agent (MTA) that integrates seamlessly with Cloudmark Authority, the industry's fastest and most accurate message filtering solution, enabling Synacor to deliver enhanced messaging capabilities and improved e-mail service quality.

Synacor offers a wide range of value-added solutions for ISPs, including private label portals, premium online content and e-mail collaboration suites. For ISPs looking to outsource e-mail management, Synacor provides white label consumer and small business messaging solutions that deliver an e-mail experience free of spam, phishing and viruses, along with high service reliability and availability.

"Today, more and more ISPs are demanding functionality, reliability and security with their e-mail," said George Chamoun, senior vice president of client services and co-founder of Synacor, Inc. "We examined several options for messaging security and found that Cloudmark Gateway and Cloudmark Authority deliver high filtering accuracy together with the scalability we require. In fact, with Cloudmark we have seen accuracy jump to more than 98 percent along with improved utilization of our existing messaging infrastructure."

As an edge solution, Cloudmark Gateway can be deployed seamlessly in any hosted messaging environment, including Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino, Novell GroupWise and open source Linux-based e-mail platforms. In addition, Cloudmark Gateway offers carrier-grade reliability and scalability, which is critical for managed services environments where service level agreements (SLAs) include financial penalties for downtime or long delivery times. Cloudmark Gateway operates in a clustered configuration with shared intelligence, policy control and dynamic failover across the cluster, while Cloudmark Authority maintains a local cache of threat data for full redundancy and independence.

Each Cloudmark Gateway server or appliance is able to process more than 3 million messages per hour in tandem with Cloudmark Authority content filtering -- 20 times faster than competitive solutions -- while utilizing only a fraction of the processing power required by other filtering solutions. This unmatched performance enables hosted messaging providers to easily scale with increasing e-mail traffic volumes.

In addition, Cloudmark Gateway integrated with Cloudmark Authority provides spam, virus and phishing protection that is 30 percent more accurate than other solutions. This is achieved by combining Advanced Message Fingerprinting(TM) algorithms, which use language-agnostic threat analysis to automatically detect virus and spam mutations, with real-time data on emerging threats from the Cloudmark Global Threat Network, the largest and most sophisticated in the industry consisting of trusted reporters in 163 countries.

"Hosted messaging providers are facing new challenges and opportunities as more ISPs and enterprises look to outsource their e-mail services," said Jamie de Guerre, CTO of Cloudmark. "However, with spam making up more than 90 percent of all e-mail traffic, the impact on storage, networks and infrastructure is considerable and providers will need to deploy solutions that are both highly accurate and resource efficient. Cloudmark Gateway and Cloudmark Authority together deliver complete control over message handling and policy enforcement at the edge of the network, stopping unwanted e-mail traffic before it impacts internal messaging infrastructure and storage. The result is significantly reduced overall system costs that can then be passed on to customers in the form of improved service and cost savings."

About Cloudmark Gateway

Cloudmark Gateway, a high-performance edge mail transfer agent (MTA), integrates seamlessly with Cloudmark Authority to deliver the industry's fastest and most accurate edge message filtering. Designed for carrier-class deployments, Cloudmark Gateway empowers service providers with complete control over message handling and policy enforcement at the network edge. Cloudmark Gateway is the first MTA to deliver rich policy capabilities at the edge. Customized policies can be applied at the SMTP stage, before messages are accepted, or at the content stage, once the message has been received. Specific threat mitigation techniques, including anti-denial of service, traffic shaping and connection throttling, can also be applied to limit all forms of messaging abuse. Cloudmark Gateway is designed for easy integration with existing infrastructure, third-party applications and legacy systems. The Cloudmark Gateway edge solution is available in software or appliance configurations based on the service provider's desired implementation scheme.
