Wainhouse Research Report Analyzes Microsoft's Unified Communications Product
Market Wire, October, 2007
Wainhouse Research (WR) has released its latest report titled "Microsoft's Software-Powered Unified Communications Strategy: A Critical Assessment of Office Communications Server 2007 and its Fitness as an Enterprise Communications Solution."
This report provides an impartial, third-party review and analysis of Microsoft's software-powered unified communications strategy. It explores the new Office Communications Server 2007 platform and Communicator client interface, describing the capabilities and architecture in detail.
"We've installed OCS 2007 in our lab and know its capabilities," said the report's author, Dr. E. Brent Kelly, Senior Analyst & Partner at Wainhouse Research. "We have spoken with Microsoft, Microsoft partners, OCS beta users, and Microsoft competitors. Organizations rolling out OCS should do so with a clear understanding of its strengths and limitations, particularly if OCS is to be considered as a PBX or telephony replacement."
The report explains Microsoft's Enterprise Voice capability and details how telephony systems can integrate with OCS. The analysis focuses on the architecture that makes integration possible and discusses which PBX vendors have integration strategies. The study describes nine strengths Microsoft has in the unified communications marketplace as well as four key weaknesses. Wainhouse Research shares its opinion on six areas where companies moving to OCS should exercise caution, particularly with respect to enterprise voice communications and presence. The report analyzes Microsoft's competition, including IBM and Cisco, and it concludes with an assessment of Microsoft's chances for success in the unified communications market.
