Symantec Extends Complete Windows Protection to Altiris Environments

(NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced that it will offer new integration with Altiris technology to provide customers with the rapid Windows backup and recovery capabilities of Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 7.0. By using Backup Exec System Recovery Integration Component for Altiris, the integrated solution will help Altiris administrators meet recovery time objectives by recovering complete Windows systems, including systems in unattended remote locations, in minutes instead of hours or days -- even to dissimilar hardware or virtual environments.

In the six months since the close of the Altiris acquisition, Symantec has integrated Backup Exec System Recovery 7.0 with Altiris Notification Server, enabling IT administrators to work from a single, familiar management console. As a result, customers will be able to perform an immediate backup of a single system or create backup policies to protect all their servers, desktops and laptops as a part of their overall system management workflow process. When needed, the administrator will then recover individual files and folders as well as entire systems to nearly any device, including virtual systems and dissimilar hardware platforms.

The Backup Exec System Recovery Integration Component for Altiris also provides comprehensive reporting, status, backup job and overall system protection information in the Altiris configuration management database (CMDB). This enables the administrator to utilize Backup Exec System Recovery's key features directly from within the Altiris console and assign policies to any designated collection of systems.

The new integration also provides Altiris management customers with a unique ability to convert physical systems to virtual (P2V) and virtual back to physical (V2P) and perform granular recovery for Microsoft Exchange, and end-user file recovery capabilities via Google Desktop or Backup Exec Retrieve. The Backup Exec System Recovery Exchange Retrieve Option simplifies Exchange recovery, providing fast and easy recovery not only of the entire Exchange server but also of individual messages, attachments, folders and mailboxes.

As a volume-based solution, Backup Exec System Recovery helps administrators capture a recovery point of the entire Windows system -- including operating system, applications, system settings, configurations and files -- without impacting user productivity. This recovery point can be conveniently saved to various media or disk storage devices, including SAN, NAS, direct-attached storage, RAID, CD/DVD and more. When systems fail, Backup Exec System Recovery can quickly restore them with minimal user intervention.

Since the acquisition of Altiris, Symantec has quickly established a clear endpoint management strategy to provide customers with the best solutions for their management needs. Integration of the Altiris management platform with various Symantec technologies is easy and seamless because of the Altiris Web-services based architecture and flexible CMDB.

Availability

Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery Integration Component for Altiris is planned to be available in early November 2007.
