Northampton Community College Enhances Instruction, Student Services, Faculty Professional Development With Elluminate Live!

The College also uses the live eLearning environment in a wide variety of other applications, including student orientations, virtual open houses, virtual office hours, academic advising, faculty meetings, and faculty professional development.

"We didn't have a real-time, synchronous way for students to ask for tutoring assistance that simulated the tutoring experience we have here on campus at the Learning Center," said Kelvin Bentley, PhD, director of Distance Learning at Northampton Community College. This tool enables us to enhance our instruction and student services, as well as close a big communications gap with our distance learners to build a stronger sense of community."

"I found that many of my students develop a 'block' to the astronomy concepts simply because they find the math problems formidable," said William J. Gibney, astronomy instructor at Northampton Community College. "Now that we have Elluminate, I conduct weekly tutoring sessions to go over the problems and address any other issues or questions that students have. I record each session and post a link to it in our course site so students can review it at their convenience. Students really do like the sessions and get quite a bit of benefit. Homework grades have improved substantially, and the dropout rate has plummeted."
