Britannica Student Encyclopedia Wins Second Teachers' Choice Award
Market Wire, December, 2007
Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc. has announced that Britannica Student Encyclopedia (BSE), its new elementary school reference set, has won the 2008 Teachers' Choice Award for the Family.
It marks the second time this year the encyclopedia has received the coveted honor from Learning magazine. In September the 16-volume set won the Teachers' Choice Award for the Classroom.
"I don't know if any other product has won two Teachers' Choice Awards, much less two in one year, but we're thrilled," said Michael Ross, a Britannica senior vice president and general manager of the company's education division. "The competition is judged by teachers, our most demanding critics, and with these two awards they're telling us that this product is great both for school and home."
The encyclopedia, published this year, represents the first new multivolume print set from a major publisher in recent years. Containing thousands of photos, images, maps and flags, it's designed to provide a reference work of contemporary substance and style for today's students.
The set makes extensive use of charts, tables and fact boxes to help readers find key information quickly. Articles are clearly divided into sections to make browsing easy, and page design is colorful, open and pleasing to the eye.
In addition to the Teachers' Choice Awards, the encyclopedia last month received the Crystal Award of Excellence from the Chicago Book Clinic. A reviewer for the Teachers' Choice Award said that BSE was "a great resource for my classroom." The American Library Association journal Booklist called it a "welcome new entry into the student encyclopedia market."
"It's a print set for the digital era," said Ross, whose company has extensive offerings online as well as on wireless and handheld devices. "It's created with the understanding that kids today get much of their information online and that books should concentrate on those parts of the research and learning experience that only books can do well."
The Teachers' Choice Award is one of the most coveted honors in education. Competing products are evaluated in the classroom and at home by teams of teachers, and only those that meet stringent standards are named winners.
