IT Mill Integrates Google Web Toolkit (GWT) and Open-Sources Its RIA Development Tools
Market Wire, December, 2007
IT Mill Ltd -- one of the leading experts on RIA (Rich Internet Applications) -- has released version 5.0 of its IT Mill Toolkit under the Apache 2.0 open-source license.
Developing sophisticated web applications used to require knowledge of a range of programming languages and tools. With IT Mill Toolkit 5 developers now have the building blocks for RIAs that will allow them to work with Java alone. Unlike any other development tool on the market today, Toolkit 5.0 seamlessly unites client-side AJAX tools with server-side Java tools, shortening the RIA development cycle.
RIAs enhance the usability of web applications. The focus of Toolkit 5.0 is developer productivity. "In practice this means the best cross-browser compatibility, high AJAX performance, and inherently secure RIA applications so that developers can focus on application workflows," says IT Mill CEO Joonas Lehtinen.
IT Mill Toolkit 5: Java and the Google Web Toolkit
Google Web Toolkit (GWT) is an open-source development framework that allows web developers to create client-side AJAX applications in Java. With GWT, you can develop and debug AJAX applications and then let the compiler translate your Java application to browser-compliant JavaScript and HTML.
IT Mill Toolkit 5 is currently the only RIA development tool that allows developers to work in Java throughout the full applications stack from databases to web browsers. "Combining GWT with IT Mill Toolkit makes it really easy to add new features to RIAs," Joonas Lehtinen points out. "This makes IT Mill Toolkit applications extremely compatible and extensible."
Contribution to the Open Source Community
As part of its commitment to the open-source developer community, IT Mill will license the core components of IT Mill Toolkit 5 under the Apache 2.0 open-source license.
The pragmatic Apache License makes it easy for all users -- commercial and private alike -- to deploy applications based on IT Mill Toolkit. A commercial license is also available for those who need enterprise-level testing tools, product guarantees and technical support.
"This is a big step for us. The industry needs open-source tools and this is our response to that need. Our tools also give smaller organizations the chance to build quality web applications," says Lehtinen. For product organizations IT Mill still offers a range of value-added components, testing tools and services on top of IT Mill Toolkit.
A quick start for web applications
Developing Java web applications has traditionally suffered from a long code/deploy/test cycle. IT Mill Toolkit 5 greatly simplifies programming by integrating a web server, application code and libraries into a single project. The package includes ready-to-run example projects that offer versatile starting points for developing Rich Internet Applications.
