Visual Numerics Announces Embeddable Analytics Strategy
Market Wire, December, 2007
As customer demand for advanced analytics grows, enterprise software vendors and data warehouse vendors are finding ways to add new business intelligence (BI) capabilities to their current offerings to stay competitive. Today, Visual Numerics , Inc., a 37-year producer of advanced numerical analysis and visualization software , announced that it is working with leading enterprise vendors such as SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) and Teradata Corporation (NYSE: TDC) to embed their numerical libraries into various applications to provide advanced data mining and predictive analytics to their customers (see details of each relationship below). Why use numerical libraries?
Embedded numerical libraries provide a number of flexible and powerful development and competitive advantages that larger BI suites cannot match. For example:
-- Faster Time to Market -- developers can embed numerical libraries as
components at any application level in new or existing applications;
additionally no proprietary data formats are required, which helps
companies roll out new or enhanced product offerings to the market more
quickly
-- Customization -- numerical libraries contain thousands of mathematical
and statistical algorithms, which ensures that developers can mix and match
exactly the right algorithms for the specific analytical application
they're building, and ensure each application is unique, and competitively
engineered to solve each problem
-- Numerical Accuracy -- numerical libraries ensure numerical consistency
across different languages and platforms; developers don't have to hard
code libraries to fit each application environment; this advantage is
particularly helpful when companies need to upgrade or migrate their
applications to new platforms down the road
-- Execution & Efficiency -- because they are written in native code,
numerical libraries can analyze data at the source -- without moving it
outside the database -- and take advantage of existing database
architectures and system performance, which helps deliver analysis results
much faster
Today, Visual Numerics also announced that SAP is integrating Visual Numerics IMSL® C Numerical Library version 6.0 into TREX -- a structured and unstructured data processing component of the SAP NetWeaver® platform -- providing the TREX engine with functions for data analytics such as outlier detection, dependency analysis and forecasting. SAP® applications that use the TREX engine will benefit from this new embedded functionality. See separate release entitled "Visual Numerics Announces OEM Agreement with SAP For SAP NetWeaver" for details.
In May 2007, Visual Numerics announced a partnership with Teradata to integrate Visual Numerics' IMSL C Numerical Library and JMSL(TM) Numerical Library for Java(TM) into Teradata applications and tools. The addition of the IMSL C Library will give Teradata developers and customers a powerful collection of mathematical and statistical functions addressing a broad range of business applications. The IMSL C Numerical Library will leverage Teradata's massively parallel and scalable architecture for improved analytical processing performance.
"As enterprise software vendors and commercial companies continue to seek ways to improve their advanced analytical, modeling and forecasting capabilities, the power and flexibility of numerical libraries will become more attractive to a wide range of constituents in companies, including software developers, product managers, sales people, and consultants," said Phil Fraher, president and CEO of Visual Numerics. "Larger BI suites serve a critical function in querying and reporting data. However for complex analytical challenges such as optimizing stock portfolios for higher performance, predicting inventory demand, and building customized analytical applications, numerical libraries are the only choice."
