Detroit's Business Community Reacts Positively to Delta and Northwest Merger

Today the Detroit Regional Chamber responded favorably to the news that Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines have agreed to combine their operations to create a premier global airline.
"This merger has the potential to grow jobs and boost the region's economy," said Richard E. Blouse, president and CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber. "Having our world-class airport as a major hub will strengthen the new carrier's position in the global economy, which means more people and goods will move through the Detroit Region."
The Chamber believes the Delta and Northwest merger will make the Detroit Region more competitive for business development, tourism and travelers. This will have a positive effect on the region's economic development strategy. This is especially true for the logistics hub and aerotropolis initiatives being aggressively pursued by the business community. These plans envision leveraging the region's air, land and sea resources to establish a major transportation center for moving people and goods around the globe. Being a strong hub for a global carrier will help the region realize this goal.
"Detroit Metro Airport is one of the region's strongest economic development assets. Nobody knows this better than Delta's CEO Richard Anderson because he held the same position at Northwest and helped oversee the development of the new terminal," continued Blouse.
