University of Waterloo Selects Aruba Networks to Upgrade Wireless LAN and Enhance Security of Existing Wired Network
Market Wire, May, 2008
Aruba Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: ARUN), a global leader in wireless LANs and secure unified mobility solutions, today announced that the University of Waterloo has commenced deployment of a facility-wide wireless LAN and a security upgrade to its residence hall wired LAN at its 1,000 acre Waterloo, Ontario campus. The University of Waterloo was founded in 1957 and has more than 27,000 students and 3,000 faculty and staff members. Following a request for proposal and a technical evaluation of both single- and multi-channel wireless LANs, Aruba was selected for the university's wireless project based on its ease of deployment, remote diagnostics, centralized management, and security. Aruba's identity-based security was also a key factor behind the decision to protect the university's residence hall wired distribution layer using Aruba technology.

The university's legacy wireless access points were very difficult to manage, and it was difficult to expand access throughout the campus. The wireless network includes Aruba's 80Gbps MMC-6000 Multi-Service Mobility Controllers, and the initial deployment consists of more than 600 access points located in academic buildings, and 500 access points in residence halls. The size of the fully deployed network is expected to exceed 1,500 access points in total.
"Provisioning a highly scalable, campus-wide wireless LAN that could be centrally managed and remotely diagnosed was our first of two objectives for this project," said Bruce Campbell, the University of Waterloo's Director of Network Services. "We also needed a network access control (NAC) solution for residence. By using the Aruba solution for wireless access, residence hall wired access, and guest wired access, we are able to reduce the number of independent systems we manage, and streamline processes for account provisioning and security incident investigation."
By automatically adapting the network to accommodate user behavior, interference, and nearby networks, Aruba simplifies wireless LAN set-up and operation. Aruba's industry-leading follow-me security capabilities provide near-universal mobility for users while ensuring that security is always enforced, even for telecommuters working from home or researchers at satellite locations. Aruba's vendor-neutral AirWave Wireless Management Suite reduces the complexity of technology migrations by simultaneously managing new and legacy devices from more than 16 different vendors: migrations can be staged on a schedule, and a budget, that meets the user's needs.
"Aruba's networks now serve more than 250,000 students in Canada at universities from coast-to-coast, and we are very pleased to include the University of Waterloo among our many university customers," said Fran Sanda, Aruba's manager for Canadian sales. "Unmanaged, student-owned laptops present a daunting security challenge to universities that want open access but need to protect the integrity of their infrastructure. Aruba's NAC solution enables mobility without compromising security, and as the University of Waterloo had demonstrated, is a best-in-class solution for both wireless and wired networks."
