Procera Networks Introduces the Industry's Highest-Performance DPI Service Creation Platform for Tier-1 Broadband Providers
Market Wire, May, 2008
Procera® Networks Inc. (AMEX: PKT), a developer of Evolved DPI solutions providing the most accurate traffic awareness, control and protection for complex networks, today announced PacketLogic PL10000, the latest in the PacketLogic family of products and currently the industry's highest-performance DPI platform. With up to 80Gbps of throughput, PacketLogic PL10000 is purpose-built with Tier-1 broadband network deployments -- both wired and wireless -- in mind. With its introduction, service providers now have a platform that will support millions of subscribers while giving them the business intelligence, service creation, network visibility and control required to successfully roll out new revenue-generating services and optimize network performance. Generally available now, the PacketLogic PL10000 already has four service provider customers from around the world and is currently operating in production networks.
"As a Procera customer since 2004, we are extremely pleased with our experience with PacketLogic, and as our business has grown to the point where we needed larger PacketLogic systems, it was an easy decision to start upgrading to PL10000," said Jens Persson, vice president of R&D at Com Hem, Scandinavia's largest cable operator. "DPI has become a critical element in our network and enables us to offer our customers the best possible service."
The PacketLogic PL10000 was designed as a carrier-grade platform to give service providers the scalability, reliability and flexibility they need to meet network requirements for today and tomorrow. It has four times the capacity of its nearest competitor, enabling a single deployment to handle millions of broadband service subscribers. This increased capacity, in combination with pertinent asymmetric traffic support and the "5 9s" reliability that carriers demand, enables deployment of PacketLogic anywhere in the network. Incorporating DRDL(TM), Procera's traffic identification engine, it also has a host of features that deliver industry leading accuracy.
"The rapid growth in IP traffic from applications like P2P, video, gaming and social networking is already impacting performance and profitability on broadband networks unprepared to effectively monetize their investments," said James F. Brear, Procera's president and CEO. "In order to make intelligent business decisions, deploy new services and effectively manage and control their network traffic, these service providers first need a powerful combination of performance and accurate visibility. The PacketLogic PL10000 was specifically designed to fulfill these pressing needs."
In addition to its enhanced accuracy and performance, PacketLogic PL10000 is now shipping with version 12 of PacketLogic's firmware. This latest version of PacketLogic's firmware delivers all the functionality of previous versions while adding new features unique to the PacketLogic platform. Version 12 is shipping with all PacketLogic models, enabling the entire product family to co-exist and deliver the same advanced functionality. The new features solve two critical objectives -- scalability and viable support of asymmetric traffic:
Flow Synchronization -- Enables the exchange of flow information across
multiple PacketLogic systems with minimum overhead traffic. This
enables bi-directional identification, even with asymmetric traffic,
which increases the number of identification criteria and thereby the
accuracy. It also makes the PacketLogic PL10000 the only DPI platform
that can be deployed anywhere in the network without having to modify
network architecture. PacketLogic Flow Sync generates very low
administrative traffic (2 to 6 percent) compared with other
architectures (25 to 50 percent).
Queue Synchronization -- Synchronize queues, meaning shaping rules,
over several PacketLogic systems, which enables multiple PacketLogic
systems to share shaping rules and enforce them over the entire
network. This is critical for large Tier-1 networks that need to
incorporate many systems to serve millions of subscribers.
New Statistics Engine -- This new engine is hierarchical and aggregates
data in several tiers to deliver an instant response, another key
requirement in order to identify and resolve issues immediately. If,
for example, anomalies are detected, an administrator can dive down to
visit the specific traffic details, thus providing scale for millions
of subscribers over multiple systems.
"Service providers are looking to use DPI to increase intelligence in the network and take full advantage of the enormous investment they are making in their network infrastructure," said David Vorhaus, an analyst at leading firm The Yankee Group. "As operators' visions for the technology and its applications broaden, the industry must address stringent management, ease-of-use, performance and reliability requirements for deployment in Tier-1 networks."
