CHW President/CEO Lloyd Dean Receives Leadership Honor
Market Wire, May, 2008
Catholic Healthcare West (CHW), the nation's eighth largest hospital system, today announced that President/CEO Lloyd H. Dean has been recognized as one of the nation's top twenty-five minority healthcare executives by Modern Healthcare magazine.
"This recognition is a very personal honor for me," says Mr. Dean. "I grew up in a time when many doors to leadership were closed to minorities. I hope today that awards such as this serve as a source of inspiration to others that with perseverance, hard work and a deep belief in yourself, anything is possible."
This marks the second time Mr. Dean has received the recognition, which was instituted by Modern Healthcare in 2006 and is given biennially. Criteria for the nomination process include: successfully serving as a leader or managing an organization or company; having shown the ability or power to effect change in the healthcare industry; demonstrating a willingness to share expertise with others in the field; serving as a role model or mentor to other minority healthcare executives and assuming a leadership position in the industry outside of the candidate's own organization or company.
In his role as President/CEO, Mr. Dean is responsible for $10.8 billion in assets and the overall management, strategy and direction of CHW's integrated healthcare system of 41 hospitals, 45 health clinics, 9 trauma centers, two medical practice groups, 50,000 employees and 9,500 physicians. CHW serves a population spanning 22 million people throughout California, Arizona and Nevada.
He is widely recognized as a leader who is deeply passionate about advocating for the poor and underserved and for his extensive leadership at the local, state and national levels, including his ongoing work towards healthcare reform. In February, Mr. Dean led the CHW Healthcare Leadership Summit, a think-tank discussion with twenty top executives from leading national healthcare organizations, on the question of how to ensure that compassion remains a fundamental element of any national health reform policy discussion.
In 2004, Mr. Dean was appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the California Commission for Jobs and Economic Growth. He also chairs the Bay Area Council's Healthcare Committee and is a co-architect of the city's Healthy San Francisco, which is nationally recognized for providing healthcare to San Francisco's 82,000 uninsured residents.
In June, Mr. Dean will be installed as the Chair for the Catholic Health Association of the U.S. He serves as a member of the boards of Wells Fargo & Company and Mercy Housing, Inc. Mr. Dean is also the recipient of the Partners in Care 2007 Mathies Award for Vision and Excellence in Healthcare Leadership. In addition, in 2007 Modern Healthcare magazine named Mr. Dean one of the 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare, for the third consecutive year.
Other 2008 recipients of this award include: Anthony Armada (Henry Ford Hospital and Health Network), Georges Benjamin (American Public Health Association), Michael Butler (Louisiana Stat University's Health Care Services Division), Danelo Canete (Hawaii Medical Center), Kevin Churchwell (Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital), Richard Cordova (Childrens Hospital Los Angeles), Paul Diaz (Kindred Healthcare), Joxel Garcia (Public Health Service and the World Health Organization), Rainier Gonzalez (Pacer Health Corp.), Pauline Grant (North Broward Medical Center), A. David Jimenez (Catholic Healthcare Partners), Kevin Lofton (Catholic Health Initiatives), David Lopez (Harris County Hospital District), Rodney Miller (National Association of Health Services Executives and Memorial Regional Hospital), Gene Miyamoto (St. Vincent's Medical Center), Cynthia Moore-Hardy (Lake Hospital System), Andrea Price (Sparrow Health System), Prem Reddy (Prime Healthcare Services), Monica Reed (Florida Hospital Celebration Health), Adam Robinson Jr. (Navy Surgeon General), Paul Tang (Palo Alto Medical Foundation), Reed Tuckson (UnitedHealth Group), Ronald Williams (Aetna), and Eugene Woods (St. Joseph Health System).
