Pratt & Whitney Moves Ahead With Sonomax Hearing Protectors

Pratt & Whitney, a global leader in design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines, is expanding their implementation of customE-A-R(TM). This is a hearing protection solution sold by Aearo Technologies using Sonomax's custom instant-fit expansion technology hearing protectors.

According to Ryan Polizzo, Environmental Health and Safety Project Management for Facilities and Service at company headquarters in East Hartford, Connecticut "We looked closely at noise issues in our facilities, and found that even with our best efforts in noise control engineering, some operations still require personal protective equipment (PPE). Some of our employees use custom hearing protectors for off-the job noise issues like hunting, so we decided to investigate how this technology could help us with noise issues on the job."

After careful investigation and trials of other custom HPD, Pratt &Whitney elected to pilot the customE-A-R instant fit technology with their Connecticut Operations, addressing mainly skilled trades, core tooling, and manufacturing personnel.. "Customer service was the deciding factor for us," said Polizzo. "After trying some local vendors, we found that the combination of customE-A-R instant delivery and the exceptional customer service provided by Ultimate Custom Fitters (UCF) best met our needs."

The customE-A-R process has been used for both salaried and hourly workers. "We found that the acceptance of a personalized device, especially when delivered with the top notch service and accommodation of UCF greatly increased the use of PPE. Both our union workers and salaried staff really appreciate having a hearing protector made to fit them. While they are certainly competitively priced compared to other custom hearing protectors, the devices are not cheap. However, we feel that the money is well spent since noiseexposed workers are wearing their earplugs more and wearing them better with this new technology - acceptance of this technology by our staff makes it worthwhile for us."

Pratt & Whitney has currently expanded the customE-A-R offering to four locations, and have about 800 people using the devices in East Hartford and Middletown, with plans to add about 200 more over the next few months. Polizzo indicated that even though the customEA- R is one of several hearing protection options available, "people are coming out of the woodwork asking for these earplugs - acceptance has been great."
