Market Wire, May, 2008
Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) and MTU Aero Engines GmbH signed today a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly pursue business opportunities in the growing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) market in Europe. Under the five-year agreement, P&WC and MTU will cooperate in positioning themselves for participation in future European UAV programs. Pratt & Whitney Canada is a United Technologies (NYSE: UTX) company.
"This MOU is an important step in positioning ourselves for success in the emerging European UAV market," said Michael Perodeau, vice president, Corporate Aviation and Military Engines, P&WC. "We have been doing business with MTU for nearly a quarter of a century and look forward to working closely with them to explore opportunities in this promising sector."
"The emerging UAV market has a strong demand for commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) engines, mainly out of the business aviation segment. P&WC product portfolio and MTU's technical capability and logistic footprint in Europe are complementary," added Michael Schreyoegg, Senior Vice President Defence Programs, MTU Aero Engines.
MTU has supplied P&WC with more than 4,000 engine modules over the past 23 years and also has a joint venture with the company in the aftermarket, P&WC Customer Service Centre (CSC) Europe. Both companies have considerable expertise in the UAV market and have cooperated in providing both hardware and technical support for the EADS Deutschland GmbH Barracuda UAV program.
UAVs, unpiloted aircraft that can be controlled remotely or fly autonomously, are used in a wide range based of missions, including reconnaissance and surveillance.
