Telcordia Selected by DARPA to Support U.S. Global Networking Infrastructure Initiative

Telcordia , a global leader in the development of IP, wireline and mobile telecommunication software and services, has been selected by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to play a key role in the Dynamic Multi-Terabit Core Optical Networks (CORONET) program. Telcordia has been awarded a major contract and leads a team that includes AT&T Labs Research, AT&T Government Solutions, Nortel and the University of Southern California.

The objective of the CORONET program is to develop protocols, algorithms, network architectures and control and management capabilities to support highly dynamic multi-terabit, core optical networks that support both IP and wavelength services. The program was created to enable a dramatic increase in the performance, resilience and security of the U.S. global inter-networking infrastructure.

The ultimate goal of the program is to advance the global networks of the Department of Defense, with the initial goal to transition the CORONET technology to commercial communications service providers (CSPs). Today, large CSPs are increasingly offering on-demand, fast-provisioned services to large enterprises. CORONET represents a major leap forward in the ability to deliver these services, enabling extremely rapid configuration of network resources to meet the dynamic needs of both commercial and Department of Defense applications, while also enhancing network survivability.

In Phase I of the CORONET Program, Telcordia and its team will develop and demonstrate novel protocols and algorithms for extremely fast provisioning and restoration at the IP and optical layers. The team will apply these to network architectures that are consistent with large carrier networks today and examine novel ways to serve demanding applications efficiently. Additionally, the Telcordia team will develop a network management architecture with innovative cross-layer capacity management capabilities that enables rapid response to end customers' service requests.
