After Wednesday’s Bell Market Commentary

On Wednesday, the markets closed slightly higher after the Federal Reserve held interest rates steady. The Fed held interest rates steady ending nearly a year of cuts to bolster the economy. Orders to factories for big-ticket manufactured goods were basically flat in May after declines of 1 percent in April and 0.2 percent in March. The Commerce Department reported Wednesday that new homes were sold at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 512,000 units in May, down 2.5 percent from the April level. Crude oil fell $2.45 to $134.55 a barrel. The dollar was weak against most other major currencies. Gold prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, traded at 4.10 percent. The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 4.40, or 0.04 percent, to 11,811.83. The Nasdaq composite index rose 32.98, or 1.39 percent, to 2,401.26. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 7.68, or 0.58 percent, to 1,321.97. The Russell 2000 index rose 8.38, or 1.18 percent, to 716.30.
