The Complete Data Protection Strategy

Market Wire, August, 2008

In today's business environment data protection is, obviously, mandatory. Data that was at one time stored as hard-copy valuable documents, ledger sheets and reports now exists in bits and bytes. Where it once was protected in locked, fireproof filing cabinets and safes it now must be protected from loss or harm by electronic means. For most companies, that means backups performed weekly or every few days.

Today's business environment also means every penny carefully spent and every second of employee time scrutinized for efficiency. Instant reaction to such factors as market conditions or competitor moves is a must if an enterprise is going to stay alive. When data is lost -- even if temporarily -- it means lost money, time and forward motion.

An accidentally deleted file can mean a portion of a business coming to a screeching halt. A cry for help comes into the IT help desk over the lost file. The IT person currently on help desk duty asks hopefully if the user has checked the Windows Recycle Bin. Yes, the user replies, but no luck -- the data was saved across the network to a server and can't be retrieved through the Recycle Bin. The IT person then initiates a search through backup. If that file existed when the last backup was performed, then several hours later the user will receive an older version of the file which he or she will then have to spend some time to bring back to its current state. But if that file has been created since the last backup, the user will have to start from scratch. This could mean hours, days or weeks of lost time, as well as lost income.

In the old days, company information was protected in real time -- its physical existence meant that it never went anywhere and was always accessible. With periodic backups, however, real-time protection and real-time recovery are not possible except in the most high-end systems. What can be done for everyone else?

The answer is a real-time data protection software solution that allows the real time recovery, with an instant click of the mouse, of any accidentally deleted file. While the Windows Recycle Bin will allow recovery of any file saved on a local hard drive, it will not recover files saved across a network to a server -- as most files are in today's enterprises. Real time data protection replaces the Windows Recycle Bin with one of its own, allowing recovery of files even if they were saved across a network.

Such a solution will save a company tremendously in lost time and money. An accidentally lost file can be instantly recovered by the user, not even necessitating a call to the help desk. And most importantly, business can keep forging profitably ahead -- as if the lost file never even happened.
