StubHub FanStats(SM) -- StubHub Reveals the Hottest NFL Home Openers
Market Wire, September, 2008
The 2008 National Football League season kicks off Thursday when the reigning Super Bowl Champion New York Giants host the Washington Redskins at the Meadowlands. Giants fans unable to score tickets from the box office have instead turned to online marketplace StubHub, paying on average $301 per ticket to watch their team take the first step at defending its NFL championship. StubHub, the world's largest ticket marketplace, has released its 2008 edition of Top 10 NFL Season Openers, ranking Redskins-Giants #2, based on average ticket selling price, a reliable indicator of fan demand.
While the demand is certainly high for the much-anticipated NFL Kickoff Game, the Green Bay Packers' home opener against rival Minnesota Vikings has the highest resale value of opening weekend, with fans spending $355 on average on StubHub. This nationally televised, Monday Night Football edition of their divisional rivalry marks the regular season debut of Aaron Rodgers as the Packers' starting quarterback. He replaces longtime quarterback Brett Favre, who is slated to start in the New York Jets' opener against the New England Patriots on Sept. 14. The game currently ranks #3, averaging $261 per ticket.
Another game of note is the Indianapolis Colts' opener against the Chicago Bears, currently averaging $253 per ticket and ranked #4. A rematch of Super Bowl XLI and the first regular season game at the new Lucas Oil Stadium has left fans with a lack of ticket availability at the box office.
Below is StubHub's unique Top 10 list of NFL Season Openers, ranked in descending order by average ticket selling price and including each team's ranking in the respective 2007 list:
