XO Communications Named 2008 Air Force Reserve Citizen Airman Employer of the Year
Market Wire, September, 2008
XO Communications (OTCBB: XOHO) announced today that it has received the 2008 Air Force Reserve Citizen Airman Employer of the Year Award in the Officer Category from the Air Force Association, an independent nonprofit aerospace organization. The Air Force Association supports the U.S. Air Force and the Air Force Family through scholarships, grants and professional development seminars.
XO Communications received the prestigious honor during an awards ceremony at the 24th Annual Air & Space Conference and Technology Exposition held in Washington, D.C. The event was attended by nearly 6,600 individuals from around the world, including Acting Secretary of the U.S. Air Force Michael Donley and Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force Gen. Norton Schwartz, as well as many of the U.S. Air Force's highest-ranking officials.
XO Communications was honored for its outstanding support of an XO Communications employee, Lt. Col. Douglas Cox, during his voluntary deployment to Iraq as a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserve. The Air Force Association recognizes employers in two categories -- Officer and Enlisted. XO was the only company recognized in the Officer category in this year's award.
In a separate Air Force Association award, Lt. Col. Cox was selected as the Air Force Reserve Citizen Airman's Outstanding Officer of the Year for his service and commitment to the U.S. Air Force Reserve. Lt. Col. Cox served in Iraq from August through December 2007 as a strategist and legal advisor in the headquarters of the Multi-National Forces Iraq in Baghdad. Lt. Col. Cox provided key guidance on matters of national and international importance to the United States and Iraqi governments as well as the thousands of troops serving in Iraq at that time.
During his deployment to Iraq, XO Communications offered significant support to Lt. Col. Cox and his family. Members of the company were in continual contact with Lt. Col. Cox's family to ensure benefits continued throughout the deployment and offered other forms of assistance, such as grocery shopping and transportation. In addition, Lt. Col. Cox's XO colleagues regularly contacted Lt. Col. Cox during his deployment to offer support.
"We're honored to have Doug as part of the XO team and are indebted to him for his service to our country," said Carl Grivner, chief executive officer of XO Communications. "XO is committed to supporting Doug and our hundreds of other employees that have served the United States through participation in the military."
Lt. Col. Cox, who has been employed with XO Communications since 2001, is a senior corporate counsel in the company's legal affairs department, overseeing legal matters regarding employment, corporate litigation and government contracting. He has more than 25 years of military service. His other military career highlights include being enlisted as an aircraft crash firefighter and a judge advocate officer, both on active duty and as a reservist. Lt. Col Cox currently serves in the U.S. Air Force Reserve as a military judge, presiding over active duty courts-martial cases.
