Ryder Ranks Among Top 100 Companies on the InformationWeek 500 List

Market Wire, September, 2008

Ryder System, Inc. (NYSE: R), a global leader in transportation and supply chain management solutions, today announced it ranked 81st on the 2008 InformationWeek 500. The ranking was revealed recently at a gala awards ceremony, part of the exclusive InformationWeek 500 conference in Tucson, Arizona.

"Ryder is pleased to be recognized by InformationWeek for the tenth consecutive year," said Dr. Kevin Bott, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Ryder System. "Because of the importance of visibility of information in our industry, we constantly work to improve processes, with the aim of staying competitive as a company and providing value to our customers. This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement."

As part of the survey for the ranking, InformationWeek evaluated two Ryder technology innovations. The first was the implementation of dashboards for Dedicated Contract Carriage (DCC) customers. The DCC Dashboards greatly boosted worker productivity by transforming disparate processes into a consolidated, automated process. The DCC Dashboards now centralize data from a number of different sources and display it using standardized business rules. In addition, Ryder worked on centralizing and consolidating IT hardware, such as servers, storage and backup/restore. The Company developed a virtualization strategy to consolidate servers and achieve power and space savings, and moved 256 physical servers onto virtual machines on 23 physical servers. Virtualization has reduced the number of physical servers needed in Ryder's data centers, as well as lowered power consumption.

"For 20 years, the InformationWeek 500 has honored the most innovative users of business technology," said InformationWeek Editor-in-Chief Rob Preston. "Year after year, InformationWeek 500 companies harness technology to improve efficiency, boost productivity, drive revenue, and establish a competitive advantage. We applaud this year's winners, and the CIOs and other executives whose ingenuity and risk-taking are at the center of business technology innovation."

InformationWeek has identified and honored the nation's most innovative users of information technology with its annual listing, now in its 20th year, and has tracked the technology, strategies, investments and administrative practices of America's best-known companies. The list is unique among corporate rankings because it spotlights the power of innovation in information technology, rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders.
