FAFCO Reacts to Senate's Extension of Tax Credits for Renewable Energy

Market Wire, September, 2008

FAFCO , the oldest and largest solar water heating manufacturer in the United States, today praised this week's vote by the U.S. Senate to extend federal tax credits for solar energy. In a 93-2 decision, the Senate approved a tax package that extends renewable energy tax credits for companies and individuals for the next eight years. The package now goes to the House of Representatives.

"FAFCO applauds Senate passage of the Renewable Energy Tax Credit as a significant step in promoting solar water heating," said Freeman A. Ford , FAFCO's founder and chairman, and International Solar Hall of Fame Inductee. "Oil continues to enjoy heavy incentives and the Senate action partially levels the playing field for renewables."

"Solar water heating represents the highest efficiency and fastest payback use of solar technology," Ford added. "The increasing use of polymers to heat water means oil can be used to make long-lasting polymers instead of being burned on a one-time basis. This leads to a significant reduction in energy costs for consumers, reduced dependence on foreign oil, lower pollution and fewer greenhouse gas emissions."

Ford is a pioneer in the solar thermal industry and a 2006 inductee to the International Solar Hall of Fame. He and Richard O. Rhodes founded FAFCO in 1969.
