Mobile WiMAX Gaining Momentum
Market Wire, September, 2008
Synergy Research Group (SRG) announces the availability of the Synergy Q2 2008 WiMAX Market Share report. The WiMAX equipment market posted strong revenue growth in Q2 with four top vendors posting triple-digit growth. Two market dynamics are fueling growth and market confidence, a formidable and growing 16e ecosystem and the recent certification process in June of this year.
Regionally, emerging countries are deploying WiMAX as their first generation of fixed broadband access. In more developed regions, WiMAX 16e is being deployed as an additional broadband offering competing directly with or augmenting existing broadband and/or mobile services. As WiMAX matures Synergy believes it will be increasingly deployed for mobile applications -- with the United States and the upcoming Japan rollout as two key examples of WiMAX's continued market evolution.
In the quarter, Alcatel-Lucent gained a leading position due to strong performance in base station sales. However, Alvarion and Motorola are close on the heels of the number one position and Synergy anticipates WiMAX equipment leadership to toggle between vendors as new network build outs continue and WiMAX gains more market momentum.
