Canada Pioneers Advanced Biofuel First

Market Wire, June, 2009

The Canadian Renewable Fuels Association today congratulated Royal Dutch Shell and Canada's Iogen Corporation on the launch of the world's first cellulose ethanol blend fuel demonstration open to the public.

For one month starting June 10, regular gasoline purchased at a Shell service station in Ottawa will contain 10% cellulosic ethanol produced at Iogen's demonstration plant. Iogen is the recognized world leader in development of cellulose ethanol.

"This is a milestone achievement for advanced biofuels," said, Gordon Quaiattini, President of the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association. "It is another example of Canada developing a vibrant and diverse advanced biofuels industry."

Advanced biofuels create new markets for agriculture producers, revitalize rural communities, reduce harmful green house gases, and offer consumers new choice at the pump.

Iogen's cellulose ethanol process uses agricultural residues such as straw to reduce harmful green house gas emissions up to 90% compared to gasoline.

"In these difficult times, advanced biofuels offer the hope of new growth and opportunity. Canada, and rural Canada in particular, is uniquely positioned to grow and prosper from the further development of these fuels," concluded Quaiattini.

Founded in 1984, the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association (CRFA) is a non-profit organization with a mission to promote the use of renewable fuels for transportation through consumer awareness and government liaison activities.
