CUPE National Secretary-Treasurer Will Present Windsor Striking Workers With Financial Support
Market Wire, June, 2009
On Tuesday, June 22nd, Claude Genereux, National Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), will be in Windsor to meet with the members of local 82 and 543.
Before visiting the picket lines, Genereux will present both locals with a cheque from previous donations. Last month, CUPE locals from all over Ontario donated $125,000 and this amount has been matched by CUPE national, for a total of over a quarter million dollars. This will be in addition to the weekly strike pay coming from CUPE's national strike fund. Also, for the remaining of the strike, CUPE will cover benefits costs for local 82 and 543 members.
"This strike is a perfect example of workers standing for strong principles and we want to make sure the members know we are behind them 100%," said CUPE National Secretary-Treasurer. "We also realize some of our brothers and sisters are going through some very though times and we will do our best to support each and every one of them."
The union also expects that there will be more donated from CUPE's over 2,000 locals across the country as the strike continues.
