It is arranged chronologically, starting at 600,000 B.C., in five large sections: first inventions, printing and dissemination of ideas, steam power and the industrial revolution, electric power and the modern world and transistors and the modern age. Horizontal bands across a doublespread layout divide inventions into four general subject areas, such as daily life and health or agriculhre and industry.
