quest for understanding differences: Globally to locally, The

Childhood Education, Fall 1998 by Croissant, Ann

The joy that radiates from the children themselves is infectious. The search for learning and understanding, as one teacher comments, is definitely two-way. We learn as much or more than the children we teach. The sense of acceptance, fun, celebration, and enjoyment of each other is impossible to miss, as each child with different abilities becomes accepting and loving of others. This is a key lesson to learn locally, as we look at ourselves and as we extend that learning globally. The message is powerful: Leave no one out.

This video is recommended for ages 2-11, although the better understanding of differences in learning and special needs offered also would be helpful for adults through parenting or staff development opportunities. The more each of us has the experience of understanding this very basic need, the more apt we are to understand and feel the need to be included, which then can genuinely be extended to others.
