Major, John S., & Betty J. Belanus CARAVAN TO AMERICA: Living Arts of the Silk Road. Foreword by Yo-Yo Ma. ISBN 0-8126-2666-4. Chicago: Cricket Books, 2002. 144 pp. $24.95. Like the travelers on the historic trade route known as the Silk Road, the people featured in this book communicate about cultures and traditions with diverse audiences.
These eight artisans, whose families originally lived in the countries of the Silk Road, but who now live in the United States, tell about their specific art forms and countries of origin. They also give insights into various complex social issues such as ethnic cleansing, religious freedom, defining ethnic groups, and the decline of age-old traditions. Photographs, maps, and authentic design motifs enhance this exploration of cultures. Ages 9-12. Reviewed by Gina Hoagland, ACEI Public Relations Manager, Olney, MD
