IT'S HARD TO BE FIVE: Learning How To Work My Control Panel. ISBN 0-06-008096-5. Il. by Laura Cornell. New York: Joanna Cotler Books, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, 2004. 40pp. US $17.89/$24.89 CAN. What can be more trying than being 5-you know what is expected of you, but you're not always able to stop yourself from doing the opposite, especially at school. Curtis and Cornell playfully and honestly portray the inner struggles of a 5-year-old. Many of these struggles will resonate with the adult sharing the story, because some of them never leave us! A personal favorite is the part about sitting still. The reader will find herself moving empathically with the illustrations of the character, reliving the urgency to MOVE! This book is a definite must for children about to embark on the journey through the perilous world of being 5. Ages 4-8. Reviewed by Isabel Killoran, York University, Toronto, ON
