FICTION Atwood, Margaret UP IN THE TREE. II. by author. ISBN 0-88899-729-9. Berkeley, CA: Groundwood Books. 2006. 32 pp. $14.95. What young child has not looked at a tree and imagined how he or she could scale to the top of it? This delightful reprint of a 1978classic focuses on two young children who have made a tree their play place. Through sun, rain, wind, and many seasons, the children explore their lofty environment. One day, someone removes their ladder to the tree as they play in the branches. They are no longer as happy to be up in the tree since they cannot get down. After a bird swoops in to save them and they reach the ground, the children affix a ladder to the tree so that they can come and go as they please. The book reminds us to use our imaginations to explore our world. The book features illustrations in the two-color mode common at the time. Ages 3-6.
