FOREVER DOG, THE

Childhood Education,  Summer 2008  by Levi, Sandra

Cochran, Bill THE FOREVER DOG. Il. by Dan Andreasen. ISBN 978-0-06-053939-9. New York: HarperCollins, 2007. 32 pp. $15.99. The bond between Mike and Corky, his beloved dog, is very strong. Corky shares every milestone with Mike and they secretly agree on a Forever Plan: to be best friends forever. When Corky gets sick and dies, the book addresses the stages of Mike's grieving process: sadness, loneliness, and anger. Mike's mother plays an instrumental role in helping him cope with the loss of his best friend. She helps Mike remember the good times they shared and succeeds in helping him understand that Corky had not broken his Forever Plan promise, because he will live on in Mike's heart. Mike comes to terms with the fact that, although the plan has changed a bit, having Corky in his heart gives him a sense of peace. At the conclusion of the book, young readers are left feeling reassured that Mike will be able to deal with the loss of his dear friend. The Forever Dog is a wonderful vehicle to use as bibliotherapy when the delicate subject of death needs to be addressed. Ages 4-8. Reviewed by Sandra Levi, Barry University, Miami Shores, FL
