Rough Notes, May 2000 by France, Larry
According to John Everhart of J.P Everhart and National Hole-InOne Association: "Prior to 1981, the availability of hole-in-one prize indemnity insurance was very limited primarily through markets such as Lloyd's of London. Low tournament activity produced high rates, which further restricted sales." In 1981, Everhart formed the National Hole-InOne Association to mass-market the insurance concept to golf professionals in Texas. In the beginning, limits up to only $25,000 were offered. Times changed and with favorable experience, the rates were reduced and limits were raised. The largest single hole-in-one prize the association has insured was $10 million cash at the Aruba Aces championship. Normal tournament par three consists of cash or automobiles; but unusual prizes such as a crop duster airplane, Arabian horses and even a casket at a funeral directors' tournament have been insured. National Hole-In-One Association, with offices in Dallas and London, is the oldest and largest provider of hole-inone prize indemnity coverage, having insured over 200,000 golf events.
