From the stacks

NEA Today, Oct 1998

I was teaching my fourth grade class about the philosophy section of the library when I pointed out, "This is the section where you can find books about how man thinks about the world around him."

One of my students asked, "Mrs. Goulart, do they have any books about how women think?"

Carol Goulart

Griswold, Connecticut

As a school library media specialist for six years, I've heard all types of requests for books from students. My new aide, on the other hand, is just discovering how funny kids can be.

Recently, a first grade boy asked her for a book about turkeys. She used the computer to locate a title and headed for the shelf.

A quick glance at the book told her it wasn't what the student wanted.

"This won't work," she told him. "This is about the country of Turkey."

The young man's reply? "A country turkey is okay-I live in the country!"

Peggy Golden

Oakley, Kansas

My second grade class was listening to the librarian describe certain sections of the shelved books.

She had arrived at the sports section and was mentioning a few sports heroes when she named Tiger Woods.

One of my more sophisticated girls commented very matter-offactly, "Oh, my mom's been there."
