Four Ways To Kiss Your Stress Goodbye

NEA Today, Mar 2004

Spring is just a few blooms away-which means, sad to say, it's time to buckle down for another round of testing. State-mandated standardized tests, advanced placement exams, SATs, ACTs, and end-of-course exams-it's enough to test anyone's sanity. But don't crash and burn just yet. Try a few of these tips to calm your mind as you help your students relax.

1. BREATHE IN1 BREATHE OUT. Good ol' deep breathing will help you chill and will reduce anxiety, panic attacks, depression, muscle tension, headaches, and fatigue. But don't cheat. Slowly count to five for each breath, in and out, to get the greatest benefits.

2. SCREAM (IF YOU DARE). just close your classroom door first. Turns out that "venting" or talking about your feelings removes negative emotions from your body and allows you to refocus your energy.

3. HAVE A BELLY LAUGH. A knee-slapping hee-haw can reduce the level of stress hormones in your system and increase production of mood-elevating endorphins. So, start trolling for good jokes now so you can share them with your colleagues later.

4. SAY "OM." Or whatever. Relaxation techniques, like yoga and meditation, can break through physical tension, unblock your thoughts, and reduce anxiety. (Oh yes, a well-deserved Caribbean vacation produces the same effect.)
