Hydrodynamic gibs offered
Manufacturing Engineering, Jul 1998
Designed as an alternative to hydrostatic and tapered gibs, Spieth hydrodynamic expansion gibs have a series of grooves that allow the gib to expand and eliminate clearance when under axial compression. Available from Advanced Machine & Engineering Co. (Rockford, IL), the design is said to eliminate hand scraping and fitting. It provides a positive guide with continuous preload and wear compensation and is available for use with rectangular or dovetail guide surfaces.
The design features hydrodynamic lubrication, high stiffness, simple clearance adjustment, vibration damping, and compensation for parallelism inaccuracies. For more information, Circle 320.
