Machine safety standards expanded
Manufacturing Engineering, Sep 2001

New machine safety standards are on the horizon for US manufacturers as Ontario, Canada mandates new regulations. In October 2000, Ontario Regulation 528/00 went into force. It mandates that PreStart Health and Safety Reviews be conducted and documented for eight specific areas of high-risk within industrial establishments. In short, the regulation requires that a professional engineer, versed in the regulation's standards, implement safeguarding devices for machines. It was noted that few safeguarding devices currently being marketed comply with these new standards, and for existing machinery, if the safeguarding device does not comply with the current applicable standard, then it must be modified.
