Abrasive machining, sawing, and finishing
Manufacturing Engineering, Aug 2002
At IMTS Sunnen will display systems that show the range of products available today from low to highvolume production. One machine on display will match-hone a clearance to a mating part with automatic gaging and size adjustments. This demonstration will show that close tolerances can be held automatically. "Large diameters are also popular," explains Schnitzler, "and we will demonstrate diesel cylinder liner honing on a large machine. A new Krossgrinding machine with Windows NT control will display expanding diamond-plated tooling."
The following items are a selection of products on display in the Abrasive/Machining/Sawing/ Finishing pavilion.
Vitrified Grinding Wheels BRGi vitrified grinding wheels with low-pressure abrasive grains are designed for ID and bore grinding. Grain is a friable seeded gel ceramic that microfractures in low-pressure applications. It constantly fractures to expose new sharp cutting surfaces during the grinding process. Abrasive does not cause greater power draw or create excessive heat that is harmful to part integrity. BRGi wheels are available in diameters from 0.204 to 4.5"(5-114 mm), thickness of 0.063 to 4.0" (1.6-102 mm) and grit sizes of 46 to 150.

Versatile Bandsaws
Company features automatic and semi-automatic, high-production and miter-cutting bandsaws including the new HBM440A. This saw has a cutting range of 17" (432 mm) in round material and 17 x 17" (432 x 432 mm) for squares and a variety of diameters and wall thicknesses when working with pipes. It can be used with either bimetal or carbide saw blades. Features of this machine include the ability to tilt the saw frame toward the operator, which considerably simplifies saw blade changeover. Saw blade can be inclined at up to 40. Behringer Saws Inc.

Cylindrical Grinding Machines
OGM series cylindrical grinding machines offer single setup, three-step grinding capability. Smallest model has an 8" (203-mm) swing and 20" (508-mm) center distance. Larger models with 12" (305-mm) swings are available with 24, 40, or 60" (610, 1016, 1524-mm) center distances. User-friendly MDI control incorporates a teach function that simplifies operation. Grinding modes available include: plunge, traverse, shift-plunge/traverse grinding, and manual traverse. Other features include a coolant system, programmable dressing, and automatic wheelhead rapid advance/retract. A dress-interrupt function enables the operator to dress on demand during both rough and fine-grind cycles. Options include magnetic separator, ID grinding attachment, and steadyrest.

Threaded Wheel Grinder
Designed for finish grinding of automotive final-- drive ring gears, speed gears, planet pinions, and other high-volume gears, the 245 TWG can handle parts up to 245-mm diam, and provide an accuracy of 2.5 pm. Direct-drive spindles are used on the grinding wheel, worktable, and dressing unit. Grinding surface speeds can be as high as 60 mps. The unit provides on-machine dressing, and a rapid load/unload mechanism to cut floor-to-floor time. A typical final-- drive ring gear can be processed in approximately one minute, and a planet pinion in 20 sec or less. Footprint is 3.0 x 2.5 m.
