SME recognized seven exceptional individuals for International Honors during its Annual Meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio, last month. Recognized for significant accomplishments in the manufacturing field, the recipients of SME's 2004 International Honor Awards are:

Recognized for contributions to SME, Papp is an internationally recognized catalyst who forges closer relationships among industry, academia, government, and labor. He has been encouraging lifelong learning and decisive leadership to SME members, students, his peers, and a host of manufacturing boards and commissions for over 40 years. A skilled toolmaker, knowledgeable manufacturing engineer, astute management executive, and business development expert, Papp has increased public awareness of SME by introducing unique training concepts and by fostering cooperation within the global manufacturing sector.

Director, National Institute of Standards and Technology-US Department of Commerce Acting Director, National Science Foundation
Recognized for distinguished accomplishments in the area of mass production and generating greater productivity by improving capability within the broad concept of orderly production, Bernent has demonstrated leadership and fostered change in a broad spectrum of scientific and technological fields. His guidance has impacted organizations and institutions including TRW Inc.; Office of Materials Science, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency; and General Electric Co.
SME Education Award
J T. Black, PhD, FSME, PE
Professor Emeritus of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Auburn University
Recognized for the development of manufacturing-related curricula, fostering sound training methods and inspiring students to enter the profession of manufacturing, Black has been teaching manufacturing engineering students since 1960 and is committed to the development of manufacturing engineering programs. Black has authored more than 70 technical publications and numerous books on manufacturing processes and systems, including Material and Processes in Manufacturing, The Design of the Factory with a Future, and Lean Manufacturing Systems and Cell Design.
SME Albert M. Sargent Progress Award
Ing. Francesco Jovane
Senior Manufacturing Professor and Director, Industrial Technology and Automation Institute Technical University of Milan
Recognized for significant accomplishments in the field of manufacturing processes, methods or systems, Jovane built the Industrial Technology and Automation Institute from a small group focused only on machine tools to a recognized world leader in developing and transferring manufacturing engineering technology to industry in less than 20 years. His technical contributions and managerial leadership have resulted in the development of new products, processes, and intelligent manufacturing systems that have positively affected Italian manufacturing.
Donald C. Burnham Manufacturing Management Award
Tom Burbage
Executive Vice President and General Manager, Joint Strike Fighter Program, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company
Burbage was recognized for his success in integrating infrastructure and process manufacturing through innovative use of human, technical, and financial resources. He integrated innovative design and manufacturing technologies into a unique airfame to meet the requirements of a multiservice fighter for the US Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps, as well as the UK Royal Air Force and Royal Navy. He also integrated three prime-contractor companies (Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and BAE SYSTEMS) into one solid team-blurring group to make the joint program a success.
SME Gold Medal
Anatoly P. Babichev, PhD
Professor of Technical Sciences, Don State Technical University Rostov-on-Don, Russia
Recognized for outstanding service to the manufacturing engineering profession through technical communications, Babichev has published his research in a wide array of publications on combining thermal, electrical, magnetic, and chemical combinations with vibratory technology and vibratory-impact strengthening and coating. Babichev established the Russian Research Directions for Vibratory Technology based on his research and expertise in the area. he has authored more than 400 published papers and holds 95 patents on manufacturing and machine design.
SME Frederick W. Taylor Research Medal
David A. Dornfeld, PhD, FSME
Will C. Hall Family Professor of Engineering, University of California, Berkeley
Dornfeld, a manufacturing engineering professor at the University of California, Berkeley, is a leader in novel sensors for manufacturing processing and was recognized for published research that has lead to a better understanding of materials, facilities, principles, operations, and their application to improve manufacturing processes. He has conducted research in several areas of manufacturing, including acoustic emission, burr formation, sensor fusion, and precision engineering and his work has been widely referenced by professional societies, industry, and government agencies.
