Automated Batch Finishing

Manufacturing Engineering, Feb 2005

An indexing rotary spindle blast system facilitates overall descaling, surface preparation, and cosmetic finishing of components in lots of a dozen components per load. Manufactured by Guyson Corp. of USA (Saratoga Springs, NY), model SPRSX-900 has a rotary table suspended from the roof of the blast cabinet, with twelve rotary spindles mounted around the table's perimeter.

One unfinished part hangs below each spindle on a hook. The table's cam indexer jogs to ease part loading through the full-width front door. When the door closes and the automated processing cycle is initiated, the spindles at two active blast stations rotate at controlled and adjustable speeds as the components are exposed to blast from multiple prearranged nozzles.

Vertical oscillation of the blast guns enables even finishing of the components. Stroke and frequency can be adjusted to accommodate parts of different lengths and diameters. After the rotary table indexes to present each component for the programmed blast treatment, completion of the batch is signaled to bring an attendant for reloading. Any type of blasting material can be used by the SPRXS-900.

Overall dimensions of the automated blast cabinet are 90 × 52 × 51'' (2286 × 1321 × 1295 mm). Circle 204
